Signaalbord

Met nog steeds een reflectie in het achterhoofd wordt het object een soort signaalbord, met een boodschap naar keuze. Deze opstelling is eerder statisch: men kan slechts de boodschap lezen op een bepaald punt.

In het volgende filmpje wordt getoond in welke volgorde het object dient opgesteld te worden, de volledige reflectie hangt nl af van een perfect afgemeten opstelling.

Het object is gesitueerd in een doorgangsruimte, waarbij door zich van de ene kant naar de andere kant te bewegen een boodschap ontwikkelt.

Deze kan gezien worden als een soort lichtkrant, waarbij elke zin pas zichtbaar wordt wanneer je de vorige gepasseerd bent.

One Day Pavillion - Solar Calendar

The results of an extensive exploration with shadows, the One Day Poem Pavilion demonstrates the poetic, transitory, site-sensitive and time-based nature of light and shadow. Using a complex array of perforations, the pavilion’s surface allows light to pass through creating shifting patterns, which–during specific times of the year–transform into the legible text of a poem. The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different shadow-poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice, a reflection on the passing of time at the period of the winter solstice. The time-based nature of the poem–and the visitor’s time-based encounters with it–allow viewers to have different experiences either seeing a stanza of the poem or getting the whole poem. All of these possible experiences are equally valuable and have meanings unique to the individual. This technique has the potential for producing particular effects and meanings within an architectural environment. Without the use of a source of power other than the sun, this project uses light and shadow to push the boundaries of communication and experiential delight.

Using a complex array of perforations, light passing through the pavilion’s surface produces shifting patterns, which transform into the legible text of a poem.
The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice. During the summer solstice, the poem will contain the theme of “new life”. During the winter solstice, the poem will be on “reflection and the passing of time.”
The pavilion is reminiscent of a geodesic dome. When daylight filters through the perforations on the surface, a poem becomes revealed on the ground as a projection.
The resulting effect is inviting and magical. Within the pavilion, the poem can be seen between 8 AM and 4PM. The poem consists of 5 lines with each line lasting about an hour. The slowness of message offers us a meditative moment within our hectic lives.

Ackroyd & Harvey

We are exploring the capacity of grass to record complex photographic images through the production of chlorophyll. The equivalent of the tonal range in a black-and-white photograph is produced in the yellow and green shades of living grass. Although these organic “photographs” are exhibited in a fresh state for a short time, excessive light or lack of it eventually corrupts the visibility of the image.

Deze objecten doen me nadenken over de relatie tussen ruimte en zijn omgeving. De meeste projecten die we voordien gezien hadden, hebben een impact op de omgeving, het landschap vooral door hun pure aanwezigheid (projecties, spiegels, …). De aan of afwezigheid van natuur, zon, licht doet geen afbreuk aan deze projecten.

Bij de twee bovenstaande projecten echter, wordt de omgeving een onmisbare factor. De werking wordt volledig bepaald door de omgeving zelf, niet enkel door de ruimte. Kleine veranderingen in licht doet het gras verkleuren, waardoor de beelden letterlijk vervagen als sneeuw voor de zon. Het One Day Pavillion zou onmogelijk kunnen functioneren zonder een zon die zich verplaatst naargelang het tijdstip van de dag en het jaar, waardoor de verschillende gedichten weergegeven worden.

Daarom lijkt het me ook interessant om mijn ontwerp verder te laten lopen in deze lijn. Een poging tot het opzij leggen van high tech sensoren en robots, moet me de stimulans bieden een ontwerp te maken dat eenvoudiger is, maar niet perse makkelijker.

Modulaire Origami

Modular origami, or unit origami, is a paperfolding technique which uses multiple sheets of paper to create a larger and more complex structure than would be feasible using single-piece origami techniques. Each individual sheet of paper is folded into a module, or unit, and then modules are assembled into an integrated flat shape or three-dimensional structure by inserting flaps into pockets created by the folding process. These insertions create tension or friction that holds the model together.

Het vouwen van de modulaire elementen is heel eenvoudig, de uitdaging ligt eerder in het assembleren van het eindproduct: volgens de regels der kunst mag geen lijm gebruikt worden.

Almost Cinema – Vooruit – Gent

Aernoudt Jacobs – Permafrost:

Een verstilde en wonderlijke ervaring voor ogen en oren. Aernoudt Jacobs ontwikkelde een machine waarin water langzaam bevriest en weer ontdooit. Terwijl de zich langzaam vormende ijskristallen voor een betoverend schouwspel zorgen, wordt het kraken en barsten dat daarmee gepaard gaat via speciale geluidsapparatuur versterkt. Op Almost Cinema stelt Jacobs het werk voor het eerst tentoon.

Greenberg’s End Times, a series of photographs featuring toddlers, was the subject of controversy in 2006. The work featured stylized hyper real closeups of children’s faces contorted by various emotional distresses. The pieces were titled to reflect Greenberg’s frustration with both the Bush administration and Christian Fundamentalism in the United States. The method for getting the children to cry (in some cases, achieved by offering the children candy, then taking it away, with their parents present & fully aware) spurred allegations of unethical conduct and provoked the submission of numerous complaints to the art gallery that hosted a public showing of Greenberg’s work.
